About the Work
I had the good fortune of sketching, photographing and talking with several Israelis and Palestinians in 2022. These portraits are of some of those I met. In these drawings, a few appear clearly Arabic or Jewish, but most do not. That interests me, as does the fact that they are all interesting people, whether or not I agree with what they had to say.
Two are human rights activists, one a human rights lawyer, one a student, one a women’s group director, three are West Bank settlers (one of whom leads the Islam-Israel Fellowship), one a West Bank businessman and entrepreneur, one self-describes as a liberal, one is a Bedouin lawyer, one a deputy mayor of Jerusalem (and strident settler advocate), one a cultural centre worker, one a story-teller, one a political strategist, one a UN representative, one an author and political commentator, one a government spokesperson, one a refugee camp director, one a senior Arab-Israeli negotiator, one a scribe, one an architect, one a member of Combatants for Peace and one a publisher.
Their names in alphabetical order are Alaa Jaber, Aryeh King, Aya Yaeesh, Ben Dror Yemeni, Bruce Brill, Dahlia Scheindlin, Deborah Schiffour, Emad Abu Shamsiyeh, Fatima Kadumy, Gabriel Ben Yitzchak, Hussein Kaabneh, Ibrahim Al Jamal, Ilan Bar-Kat, Israel Danziger, Itamar Shapira, Jonathan Conricus, Lisa Bloom, Marwa Abu Shamsiyeh, Miri Elsin, Naseer Arafat, Sam Bahour, Sami Meo, Wessal Shweiki and Xavier Abu Eid.
