About the Work

The obvious irony of keeping peoples from other countries and cultures from migrating to Britain whilst proclaiming a new global role for the country, was not lost on me. I took the world's richest golf tournament, held in 2021 at the prestigious Royal St George's, Sandwich, Kent, which is only a few miles from my studio. The Royal St George's lies on the shores of the English Channel, so I juxtaposed a boatload of illegal immigrants trying vainly to attract the attention of shadowy and uninterested golfers during a heavy rainstorm. The flag of St George, used by the club on its greens, gave my work a visual focus as well as a comment on the uncertain future of the United Kingdom.

″I still use the same approach to my work: I get an idea, think of the title and then make the work. So not much has changed since 1964″
